Which kind of UNIX do you mean? AIX? HP-UX? Solaris? Those are proprietary and only available when purchased (and for most only with the matching hardware). A free variant of Solaris (Open Solaris) is available through the boards directory.
An alternative route would be to try one of the BSD variants, as they are probably more "unixy" than most Linux distributions.

UNIX is a blueprint for an operating system, not an operating system itself.

The "normal" version Solaris is free to use and can be downloaded also.

Head on over to:

Sun Microsystems

where you need to create a (free) login.

Once you have done that you can download Solaris (Sparc and x86) for free at:

http://http://www.sun.com/download/

Hope this helps,
~Robert

As i mentioned i dont want to go for unix flavours like solaris, ubuntu, redhat, ibm aix, hp-ux etc.

I want to install plain unix.

  • nilesh

as already mentioned above, there is NO plain unix. you have to build your own version if you don't want to use something like solaris...

aix, hpux are ATT UNIX SVR2 derivatives.
solaris is an ATT UNIX SVR4 derivative.
SCO Unixware isn ATT UNIX SVR4 derivative (or, until recently, one could argue this is UNIX)
BSD is ALSO UNIX... maybe you want that? You can try FreeBSD. It's just that POSIX tended to be more like ATT UNIX System V UNIX, so you might find BSD to be very different in many respects.

Plain UNIX? You could try to get a hold of the original ATT tape. Will be difficult to port.

Alternatively, ynilesh could download the UNIX IEEE Std 1003.1-2001 (POSIX.1) standard on the The Single UNIX Specification, Version 3, and write his own from scratch

and his username will fit nice for the new distribution:

"YNIX"

I like it!

YNIX by ynilesh, has a very nice ring to it!

maybe some years in the future there is a wiki entry about the "birthplace" of ynix and how the name was developed ;).

I hope so. It will increase our Google Rage Ranking (PR) if we have more links from Wikipedia!

We could even run YNIX for this site instead of Ubuntu Linux! I am really excited about this!

However, if ynilesh does not create YNIX, he can still use OpenSolaris if he does not have the time to write it from scratch! So many options! :b:

Thanks a ton !!!
I appreciate that you guye gave me so many idea's. I would really like to implement my own unix.

If I am not making mistake, long back on unix.org there was downloadable version of unix available. I dont remember what exactly it was.

  • ynilesh

You are making a mistake.

There was never a Unix release available from there. The unix.org web site is about specification/certification but not implementation.
