Unable to install client AIX LPAR to vscsi hdisk provided from VIOS

Hi everybody,

I have Power5 server with 4 internal hdisks each of 70Gb.
VIOS server was installed via Virtual I/O Server Image Repository on the HMC.

HMC release - 7.7.0

VIOS rootvg installed on 2 disk(these disks merged to one storage pool during VIOS install process),and 2 others hdisks we are going to use for client LPAR installation.
On VIOS and client LPAR profiles virtual server/client scsi adapter was created with the identical adapter ID on both server/client.
AIX installation process able to see assigned hdisk to LPAR, but during the installation process i got an error:

mkvg: LVM system call returned with error code (-267)
0516-1184 mkvg: IO failure on hdisk0
0516-862 mkvg: Unable to create volume group.
BOS Install: Could not create the root volume group.

Okay, so I'm a bit rusty. It's been a few years.

  • On the VIOS, did you define logical volumes to pass to the LPARs to use, or have you just tried to pass them the whole disk? You should be able to create an LV (and mirror) and then define that as a virtual device passed to the LPAR and install to that.[*]When you get the SMS up on the LPAR, can you find the disks defined/available for you to install to? Do you get enough of a serial number/id to be sure which you are targetting?
