The Terminal on Mac OS X

Does anyone know the differences in commands when it come to Linux and Mac OS X? I'm wanting to know if I use "this" command in Linux and It doesn't work in Mac then what command is equivalent to the one in Linux. Example Ctrl+Alt+f2 switches to (tty2) so what equivalent switches to ttys2 on Mac?

There is no equivalent. End of story...

OSX is not Linux.

If you require another terminal then use cmd n and open up another one, only if a terminal is already running and has the focus.

Unix commands are broadly similar but there are subtleties that will work on one system but not the other.

Hope this helps...

So I know that OS X is based off UNIX(BSD)

What I'm looking for is something like this. (Look at attachment)

I understand that some Linux commands won't work but there are Equal commands, they may not be the same commands but the commands do the same thing

I think you will not find a translator like what you're looking for.
This might help you understand why (expounding on wisecracker's post above):
what's the difference between linux and unix commands? - Stack Overflow
Some judicious use of "man -k" or "apropos" can help you locate the functionality in commands you might want to utilize, should a command found in Linux not be available in another Unix OS.
Of course, if you have the time, you could create the translator you are looking for.

configure: error: Can't find libICE

Uh.. yes and no. The programs and utilities are BSD-ish...so somebody comfortable with a BSD variant will have no problem. However it is *not* BSD... if for no other reason than it uses a Mach based kernel.

So...is it BSD +... no. It's close to that though.

It feels like BSD mostly, but with some differences and has some GNU-isms here and there. And of course a lot of very unique Apple-only things (some of which do *not* work that well).

Try using:

./configure PREFIX=/usr

Replace /usr with the apropriate path for/on MaxOS.
Then make [install] should work fine.

No promises made,
hth

You should read the INSTALL and README files before you attempt to compile open source software. You are missing the dependency lib.ICE- configure: error: Can't find libICE because configure cannot find X11 installed on your system- checking for X... no . BTW, configure and make as yourself (no sudo) then make install as root (sudo).

What do you mean replace /usr with the apropriate path for/on MaxOS?

I'm trying to figure out how to update apps via the terminal. i know how to do a software Update via Terminal but i just need to know how to Update the apps. Why would I not update the apps via the app store? Because i want more Freedom than that. These apps that I'm trying to update i can not find on the app store.

You asked how to update an app. You were told how to update an app. But, of course each app may need to be handled completely differently. If you find an update for an app, read the directions for installing that update and follow those directions.

If the directions ask you to update some variable to indicate where the app should be added/updated, update that variable with the name of the directory where that app is installed on your system (i.e., where you installed that app in the 1st place).

Does any one know how to Use Fdisk on a Mac? I also need to know how to connect to a Hard drive via Terminal? I need more of an explanation of the commands in the picture also please.

Please open a new thread for a new question.
