You can create both 'boot' and 'root' floppies on the running system with

# mkdev fd

What problem are you trying to fix?

Interesting.
Normally mkdev should only ensure the respective device node.
But with fd it proceeds with formatting.

@MadeInGermany...........On SCO the 'mkdev' command runs scripts located in /usr/lib/mkdev so the command

# mkdev fd

run the script /usr/lib/mkdev/fd

Scripts in there are usually the standard one's from the distro but could equally be edited (customized) or created from scratch. So yes, the fd script formats the media, and then builds boot and root sets including the driver(s) for that particular system.
