Idea for master thesis related to Linux : Redhat.

Hello Team,

I am on last semestr on my studies. I have a problem with choosing right thesis topic. Do You have maybe any ideas for thesis related to Linux area? I really need your help - the most important thing is that there should be research element in the topic because of master degree level.

Thanks in advance!

Why Redhat ? Depending of the subject, I am not sure you will have all the information unless Redhat gives you access... Since its academic I would have thought you chose Debian if staying in Linux world...

Hi,

You've not indicated the nature of the degree you're doing, but one idea that comes to mind is to look at why Linux emerged as the most widely adopted of the Intel *nix operating systems. There were other x86 UNIX distributions or UNIX-like OS's emerging (or indeed already well established) around the same time that Linux came on the scene. What was it about Linux that gave it the advantage that ultimately led it to being so dominant ?

Of particular interest might be to compare its fortunes to those of FreeBSD, which has an ancestry older than that of Linux. It's certainly still around and thriving, but has nothing like the degree of adoption that Linux does. Why is that ? What made one apparently "free" OS succeed widlly, whereas others did not enjoy the same degree of success ?

This topic would work I think both from a techinical and non-technical standpoint, since the reasons are neither solely technical nor commercial, but a definite mixture of both. Just a thought, but this could be a springboard into lots of other topics both technical and non-technical around the computing industry as a whole, depending on what your degree actually is.
