HP UNIX HFS 10.2 system corrupted

I have one old HP Unix machine, 2GB harddisk working fine, but system file corrupted and not bootable, is there anyway to copy data to Windows platform? or anyone can do the job, I am happy to pay for the job.

thanks in advance.

Welcome on board,

We need to know a bit more about the box in order to reply anything useful to you, what kind of machine ( architecture: D,K class? series 700?)

What makes you think the disk is fine? Have you a mirrored system disk, what about backups?

You cannot copy data like that from a corrupted file system, if corrupted it un readable or readable with dd or other equivalent tool which would make you a copy with the corruption so you would now have 2 bad disks...

Knowing what kind of server will help us guide you on what is feasible and perhaps assist you a little more, but that has been long time since my last HP-UX salvage, almost 20 years...

P.S. We don't permit PM as Q/A are for the community and so I will have to remove your email.

Thanks

Just mount the corrupted disk on another computer and see if you can fix the file system.

Here is an example of mounting HFS on Linux:

From the above reference:

First, make sure that you have hfsprogs installed. Example installation command:

sudo apt-get install hfsprogs

Next, mount or remount the HFS+ drive; commands need to be as follows:

sudo mount -t hfsplus -o force,rw /dev/sdx# /media/mntpoint

or

sudo mount -t hfsplus -o remount,force,rw /dev/sdx# /mount/point

Finally, if the drive was improperly unmounted or has otherwise become partially corrupted run fsck.hfsplus (provided here by Jayson) as such:

sudo fsck.hfsplus /dev/sdx#

This is how I recommend you proceed @itsts2006 If you do not have another HP-UX box, mount on Linux and fsck there and you are back in business.

Thanks for advise

will try tomorrow and update
I am afraid the file system is HFS 10.20, instead of HFS+.
Does it work with HFS?
the machine is very old custom HP UNIX industrial machine, running on HFS10.2

the machine is very old custom HP UNIX industrial machine, running on HFS10.2
harddisk is working fine as we had made image of whole drive to backup.img with no bad sector(Windows platform).
we don't have any more HP Unix machine, the best is to find a solution to copy files to Windows

thanks

I think the best solution is to mount the disk, fix the corruption with fsck and copy the files to Linux.

Then, after that step you can copy to Windows.

sudo mount -t hfsplus -o force,rw /dev/sdx# /media/mntpoint

does this command work with HFS

These machines don't get corrupted easily, something just have happened, what went wrong? power outage? The most silly case I saw was somone corrupted the kernel... and so and next reboot, vlammm

But I can't give any advise more than what is written above not knowing with what machine we are dealing with, if truly HFS disk then it is not a server... and many stations (and servers...) had only root file system as HFS the disk was LVM then I don't remember HFS disk with only one partition my souvenirs back in 92-94 would be 9 partitions

After taking time to look at this more carefully, the HFS filesystem supported by Linux is for MacOS not HP-UX.

The solution I found was to mount on Linux using NFS:

I am afraid that system files may be partially corrupted and not bootable, machine is not functioning as it's 25 years old.

I can't export hfs fs from HP

is there any other way to mount on linux or anyone can help with file transfer to Windows?

try sudo mount

with error

not compatible with HP-UX HFS

any suggestion?

The only thing I can suggest is to find another HP-UX box (or create one) and mount the corrupted system there (and fix it).

You cannot copy files from a corrupted file system (that I can recall), especially if you cannot mount the filesystem.

You could do a disk-to-disk copy of all contents on the disk but that new clone would be just a corrupted as the original.

You could build new boot disk or partition on your HP-UX computer, and then mount the corrupted filesystem to recover the files; but it sounds like you have no way to build a new OS and boot partition.

You keep asking "how to copy to windows?"; but it you cannot copy to Linux, you certainly cannot copy to windows. Linux is much more capable and flexible than windows and supports many more filesystem types.

I can't mount HP-UX HFS to linux due to HFS corrupted
I don't have any more HP UX BOX

is there any recovery software which can recover from HP-UX HFS?

or anyone can do the job.

Yes, a HP-UX 11 box certainly can mount/read the disk.
If the box still has got an adapter for that disk.

No backup on another medium (tape)?

How about repairing the old system? What happens if it boots? Any error message?

yes it can be mounted elsewhere I see no reason why not, of course is a HP-UX box it would be easier only, those 2Gb I suppose internal disks if you say 25 years are old SCSI disks, they don't last forever either, I am surprised it did not fail before...

I had a E55 box (hp-UX 10.20) I kept under perfusion because of the old database almost impossible to migrate, I had to replace from 1999 to 2013 at least 6 times the root disk, as you can't find new one I had refurbished devices from HP, I cannot help you more as you have not give at least the information I asked previously...
We don't even know what your box is, if it has a tape drive ( because of its age it should be a DDS 1) or a CD device

I don't have working HP UX Machine now, the scsi hdd still in good condition, and I had image the whole scsi to 2gb file no compression - backup.img. I uploaded to google drive, if anyone know how to use winhex or dd to reimage to a new scsi / ide / sata harddisk, you can plug it into your HP UX box to mount and copy the files out. anyone who can help please

then I can send you the download link, I prefer not to share personal file here, I will pay who can help with it.

HP UX 10.2, running on HFS system, not vxfs
the machine is OEM industrial machine, original label was torn down hence no model number is available.

Sorry I can't help you, as we still don't know how you can be sure its a FS corruption, as you have not given details on what happened: HP systems have always 2 kernels so if the current got corrupted you could boot from the previous... as the kernels are always at fixed address there should be a way to boot from it and mount by hand the FS ans use fsck, only there are options I don't remember, you would have to look in manuals, to stop the system syncing then reboot immediately... Only if you really have file system corruption you have to be aware it hard work after and you'd better know all your files and their size in order to get them back: all corrupted files will be found in lost+found directory with fancy names, it takes really lot of time to guess what the files are and rename them if they are still good... I did that once with 300 Mb of files from / and spent 3 days as I did have backups but non bootable, and I was looking for the restore command... and yes I did find it and got myself out of trouble, but since I always have many bootable backups for a system and learned backup softwares are good things but of no use if you don't have a complete system in working order with that software

Maybe you could try to see if jesse@cypress-tech.com who sells second hand and refurbished hp parts if he can give you a help or suggest something as you cannot provide what machine it is or even its processor (Pa 1.1?, 7000? 7100?...)
HP machines have a initial system loader but to access it you need to know what type/series... and 9000/700 are not like 9000/800, so I think the best deal is to see with Jesse if he can help you
