GNU's Not Unix! - The Free Software Foundation

The GNU Project: http://www.gnu.org/

i still like saying "G - N - U" better than "GUHNEW"

Me too. Same for "GNOME".

I don't understand where the G is derived from..

Nothing is more tedious than attempting to explain a joke to someone who doesn't get it. No one can provide an answer that you will find satifactory.

Had you followed our rules and performed a search prior to asking a question, you would have found this thread.

I also like to call it G N U!
Because it is easy for me to talk to others!:stuck_out_tongue:

Hmmm... maybe someone should write an FAQ on the proper pronunciation of common *nix terms; i.e.: is it lie-nix (like Torvalds himself says, and therefore what I follow), or linnucks (like almost everyone else I meet says)?

its not that serious. call it whatever you want, as long as other people know what you are talking about. no ones gonna be like "huh?" if you say LiNUKS, or LIE-NUKS, or LEENiX.... haha unless they have never heard of linux period.

yeah i agree with every nixer knows GNU no matter how you pronounce it. I just pronounce it as NEW because if I say Ga New All I can think about is Garry Gnew from the great space coaster when I was a kid and nix is much more complex than a kermit wanna-be!!

no, Linus is not reading it as "lie-nix". see this page.

linux systems is a cheap way of learning Unix isnt it?

How DARE you say linux is cheap! Its better than Unix! <---- running joke there.

But yeah, Um... kind of. Some of the features in Linux surpass those of Unix and vice versa. Not really cheap (as in less effective), but more like difference in tastes. Kinda like, "Do you want RED HAT or AIX, on this cone?"

lol, i dont really have a contribution to this thread... just thought id let you all know that they verbal explanation of *nix terms was amazing. lol

lien-uckz
lin-ickz
lin-uckz
lee-nuckz...

The G doesn't stand for anything.
The G is there simply to make the acronym an actual word. Gnu is an actual word (name of a type of antelope). Any other letter, and the acronym wouldn't work as a word.

anu
bnu
cnu
dnu
enu
fnu

... you get the idea.

uhhh.... yea antelopes.... im pretty sure it means

Gnu Not Unix lol..... just a guess.

..yeah, haha, lol, blah blah...

I was responding to the question as to the reason behind the letter G being used in the name, as in why it isn't named BNU (Bnu Not Unix), or CNU (Cnu Not Unix), or even GINU (Ginu Is Not Unix). There's no other reason to particularly use the letter G in the name other than make the recursive acronym an actual word.

..haha, lol, whatever...

thank yoouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuman

the correct way to pronounce GNU is "GNU".

In my opinion it should be pronounced exactly the same as in "Gnu Song" by Flanders and Swann.

I'm sure this has probably been mentioned, but I HIGHLY recommend the DVD entitled "Revolution OS (2002)". It stars Linus Torvalds, Richard M. Stallman, Eric Raymond, Bruce Perens, Larry Augustin, and other key players in the birth of Linux, and the origin and correct pronunciation of GNU, right from Richard Stallman. Buy this DVD, you won't regret it.

You can find it on Amazon, just search for "revolution os". Here is the short description: "REVOLUTION OS tells the inside story of the hackers and computer programmers who rebelled against Microsoft and the idea of proprietary software to create GNU, Linux, and the Open Source movement. Shot on location in Silicon Valley on 35mm film and in widescreen, REVOLUTION OS captures an offbeat group of characters who are three-parts libertarian, two-parts communist, and one-part bad garage band."
