Chess Players: Which Online Resources (and Software) Do You Use and Why?

Hi Chess Players,

Which Online Resources (and Software) Do You Use and Why?

As for me, I use chessgames.com and chessbase.com ; but currently I'm using chessgames.com the most; I like exploring openings in the chessgames.com opening explorer.

For analysis on the desktop (Mac) or iPhone I normally use either Deep Shredder, Stockfish or Smallfish... on my desktop I tend to use Stockfish more and on my iPhone I use Smallfish, for the most part.

Currently, I'm mostly interested in the Najdorf (ECO B90 etc) .. FYI.

That sounds quite serious to me. I do try but I don't really have the time - and I can't get access from within work  I'm just glad I can get to www.unix.com :b:

I think it actually falls foul of our rules about being able to paste data or attach files (given that we're a financial company and we have Data Protection to consider) I don't know how I've got away with it, but delighted I have. :stuck_out_tongue:

With all my 'spare time' now that my employer has graciously given me, I might have a dig around them.

Cheers,
Robin

Yeah, I've gotten more serious about my over-the-board chess play this year; after abstaining for many years. When i was a "young-buck" chess play decades ago, there were but a few good books and no huge Internet databases and ECO classifications of chess openings and variations. But when I started to recently get back into chess for the fun of a glass of wine with a friend and over-the-board play on a super nice chess board with 60mm squares, I could not help but notice how the world of chess has become so much more interesting with all the on-line databases and all the different approaches to analysis.

As a child, I think learning chess at 5 really helped contribute to a part of my young mental-development and now as an aging guy, I'm finding exploring chess again contributes again, to keeping the mind sharp and not to mention have a beer or glass of wine with a dear friend and playing a "real world" game versus a chess engine is really a nice way to spend the evening!

At chessgames.com for example I can explore an opening that I played over-the-board with a friend as part of the post-analysis of that game, and then when I get to a certain point, I download the PGN file and load it into a chess engine and continue playing a few variations against the computer long after my friend has good home and is off to work the next day.

Or, I can go to the same site and, as a member, search for all Bobby Fischers Najdorf games (in their DB) and download all and load them into my favorite chess engine if I'm in to the mood for "nerd play"..... versus playing with a friend over-the-board.

.. well, I'm interested in what other chess players here think and what they are doing, so that's why i posted this thread; not to bore you with what I'm doing in the chess world these days!

Slightly off topic as I no longer play chess but this was my fav' computer version...

AMIGA A500, Battle Chess...
(45 minutes long but oh boy what memories.)

Haha... It's the amazing wealth of information and analysis on the game that has exploded exponentially since the dawn of the Internet that creates better players.

The ECO (Encyclopedia of Chess Openings) classification system alone is amazing; and that system is only a part of the new family of chess databases available to students of the game.

My hope is that we have some readers who are avid chess players and have a few online databases or favorite chess engines to share and discuss.

I'm just about to start teaching my eldest the game. He's 8 like I was, so fingers crossed I can explain it well enough. With the opportunity of unlimited time off without pay from my employer now here, I might even start up a club in his school (only 30 pupils per year) until I can get myself employed again.

That should keep me alert I'm sure. Does anyone have some pointers on how to start teaching, especially for a group?

Robin

Somehow this slipped my attention...

The site i use for online playing is Free Online Chess ChessCube. The site is not without bugs, but it is a free site and i can play from my Linux laptop. Most sites are limited to Windozw one way or the other.

Chessgames.com: Chess Games Database & Community is a nice site for finding classic games but i i recommend to ignore the comments section. I have two grandmasters among my friends and when i showed them the comments to their own games they nearly fell over backwards laughing.

I do NOT use any computer to analyze my games - it simply makes no sense! A computer can give you variations, but what a player on my level (i am around 2000 ELO) needs is to understand the position. For the same reasons all these opening books which are merely database exports are useless for me. I once analyzed a french opening position with my friend, who is also known as an world-class expert of the french defense. At one point i put my queen to b6 and he said something like "yes, there is always the question in this variation complex [French, Winawer variation] to either put the queen to b6 and attack d4 or put it to c7 attacking e5". He went on to explain when to do the one and when the other - 5 minutes of explanation and i had an understanding of the position which a computer would have never helped me to get. I read the book by Moskalenko (Viktor Moskalenko: The Wonderful Winawer) about the french defense before and he didn't explain that either. After getting this insight i re-read it and found that all the grandmasters seem to know this too (now, this is a big surprise) because all the variations there followed the rules laid out by my friend. The author just could have explained that instead of cramming in the newest developments in a sub-sub-sub-variation starting on move 33.

I think at my (mediocre) level it is better to learn the methods to come up with second-best moves instead of playing 10 first-class moves learned by heart, followed by 5 no-sense-moves. If you get some tactical prowess on the way and don't blunder away piece after piece you will have 2000 yourself in no time. Once you pass 2200 or 2300 you need to learn variations because you will need the first-class moves now - but only then! You do not need the opening arsenal of a FIDE master when your rating is at around 1500.

Chess is about understanding - the dynamics of a position, the movement patterns of pieces, the development of pawn chains, strong and weak squares, and so on. If we try to memorize instead of understand we are not only taking away from the game - we are taking way from the creative accomplishment a well-played game can be.

Btw., if someone wants to play: my handle is "wouk" and my opening repertoire is Queens Gambit or Birds Opening with white, with black i play the french defense and the Prussian (two-knghts defense), against the Ruy Lopez mostly Marshall and Birds Defense (3. ...Nd4). Against 1. d4 i play the Slav, sometimes (in blitz games) "the Vulture" as a surprise weapon.

PS: @Neo: if you are not at above 2000 already i suggest you try another opening. The Najdorf variation in the Sicilian Defense is an extremely well-analyzed opening where you simply have to know the latest developments. Most moves cannot be found over the board (well, not by mere mortals withouth a GM title) and many variations are "make-or-break" to the extreme: one suboptimal move and the game is without any hope. There are openings which are more tolerant because the positions are not that extra-sharp. But then, maybe i am just too much a coward to play it.

Hi Bakunin,

I often play the Najdorf variation in the Sicilian Defense; but lately have been enjoying more modern openings for fun (1. Nf3 ... ) as both black or white. Generally, I don't enjoy Blitz chess; and I do tend to do post game (over the board games with friends) with computers; currently I use HIARCS on both the Mac and iPhone6. I also have other chess engines such as Stockfish and Deep Shredder, but have become an increasing big fan of HIARCS. I'm not rated above 2000, I think my last USCF rating years ago was around 1700.

Currently, I play about once a week over the board with a good friend of mine; and I also play a bit with another friend on my iPhone using "Chess Time" which is a multi-player chess app that is specifically not for blitz chess and runs on both IOS and Android (and the app is free as well as to play). Generally, I don't play with "strangers" as I like to put a face and personality to my chess playing.

If you install the Chess Time app my username is "neounix" and I'm happy to play with you or any forum member using the Chess Time app (IOS / iTunes screen capture attached), as that apps seems to work best for me and my schedule. (Android version of Chess Time)
