Hi I find that the attachment size are very limited. For eg, if we wish to analyse explorers from Sun systems or messages file, definitely they will exceed the given 3.5MB .. Dun you think so?
What size attachments do you suggest for what type of file extensions?
A typical explorer file can be abt 15-20MB in size. Its extension will *.tar.gz
core files MAY be abt a gig.. but its much useful in our forum.SUN explorer upload will be a fine choice. The very first troubleshooting step from SUN will be to analyse explorers.
I think that size requirement of > 20MB is beyond way too steep.
Why would you want to post a core file, for example? Aside from the obvious security problems, if every new user here since January 2008 posted one core file only, the server would likely run out of space. Neo knows exact numbers, my estimate could be inflated. But I'm thinking it would be like ~1TB to do that.
For a post to be useful, attachments would have to "stay" as long as anyone can view the post. Would you be personally willing to host nnTB of storage over five years for something like your suggestions? I cannot.

But in fact, I guess that you can limit a maximum of 50G of space at least and set a time threshold for the "huge" files to be there. Be it if the query is responded or not, you can put your stand to housekeep your storage area.
Jim, that would be ~300GB since Jan 1, 2008 but that's only the half of it, we also have to pay for bandwidth.
Anyway there is absolutely no way we could do this. As pointed out there are too many security concerns both through direct misuse and through the inappropriate disclosure of information on other systems.

We could offer a value added service like this; but folks would have to pay for it. We would have to provide the storage, the bandwidth, and the security for the files, including user agreements, etc.
This is all doable, but not under the current "free model" for the forums. This would be a commercial service, and not "free" or "cheap".
I suspect Mr. Incredible would like all this service and service management for free, and that is why reborg closed the thread. I reopened the thread because I am interested in knowing how folks would propose "someone" provide this service (not necessarily this site).
