Album Cover Contest

This one's inspired by Smiling Dragons Movie Screenshot contest

The rules are simple:

  • 10 Albums are posted, with band/artist/name information either removed or made illegible.
  • To score a point on a cover you'll have to post the name of the band/artist, album name, and release year. If either information is missing there won't be a point awarded
  • First to post the correct answer scores the point. Should you edit your posts, the date of the latest edit is the entry date.
  • A total of 200.000 credits will be awarded for the first 3 places in the ratio 1:2:3. Should anyone want to donate additional credits they'll be added to the total pot.
  • The contest ends when all covers are solved, or in 1 week (Wed, February 24th 2010, 20:00 CET) latest.

AS OF NOW THE CONTEST IS OVER

The final score:
reborg: 4 Points
zxmaus: 1 Point
rhfrommn: 1 Point
scottn: 1 Point

This means that we have 3 people splitting the second place, which means that the pot is split as 120.000 for the first place, an 27.000 each for the second (factor 3:(2/3) (yes, I've rounded up, sue me :\) )) Bits will be transferred shortly, and I'll leave this thread open for a bit in case anyone else wants to comment.

And this are the 10 albums for this round in chronological order:

  1. Beatles - Abbey Road (1969) by reborg
  2. Queen - A Night At The Opera (1975) by scottn
  3. KISS - Dynasty (1979) by reborg
  4. AC/DC - Highway to Hell (1979) by rhfrommn
  5. Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (1985) by reborg
  6. U2 - The Joshua Tree (1987) by reborg
  7. R.E.M. - Out of Time (1991) by reborg
  8. B.B. King & Eric Clapton - Riding with the King (2000) by reborg
  9. Rammstein - Mutter (2001) by zxmaus
  10. The Sounds - Crossing the Rubicon (2009)

To get things started. Here's what I think of without thinking about the ones the I recognise without being able to quite remember which albums they are.

  1. Beatles - Abbey Road
  2. KISS - Dynasty
  3. Dire Straits - Band of Brothers
  4. U2 - The Joshua Tree
  5. R.E.M. - Out of Time.

9 Rammstein Mutter 2001

Don't forget that you'll have to name the release year too.

Great albums!

Two of those are my favorites! U2 - The Joshua Tree is the best. I was listening to it yesterday in fact. Ditto for R.E.M. Out of Time. Amazing works of art!

Hahaha..... easy to Google the year from reborg's answer! I vote we give him credit

That's why I picked them. "Where the streets have no name" and "Losing my religion" are my all-time favorites. But seems it's too easy, guess I'll have to go more Indie and/or obscure with the next round ]:->

And you're right, it's easy to get the year by searching for the album. However, for not providing the year in the first place, I'll only award ceil(answers/2) points for those answered correctly (there's 1 mistake).

Yes, of course. I was looking at a DVD box set at the same time.

"Band of brothers" should have been "Brothers in Arms" (1985)

My musical tastes are varied to say the least. I'm willing to donate some challenging images to you for the next round.

Losing my Religion is also one of my favorite R.E.M. songs to listen to too but "Country Feedback" is one of my favorite songs to play/sing, mostly because I like the Cmaj7 chord switch during the musical pauses in the lyrics.

Yes, of course. I was looking at a DVD box set at the same time.

The one with Clapton and B.B. King is either driving with the King or riding with the king and 1999 or 2000.

I'm going to say

8. "Riding with the King" (2000)

My musical tastes are varied to say the least. I'm willing to donate some challenging images to you for the next round.

You are right of course.

Hints for the 3 remaining:
2. Someone died all too soon from all the wrong reasons
4. There's the hint of a destination on the cover
10. The band claims to know what music is made of

I'm all open for suggestions

Never could get myself warmed up to "Country Feedback". Rather have a bit of "Nightswimming" or "The One I Love".

I'll put up bits for the next round (as well as offering images) but I'm extremely busy right now so I'll have to let you look after the rest.

Please upload a recording of you playing and singing Country Feedback. Please Please! There are very tough notes to hit in that song!

I NEED THIS, I NEED THIS!!!!

  1. is AC/DC Highway to Hell 1979.

:D:D:D Not a chance. I can even get close to that register. I sing the high bits either one or two octaves lower than Michael Stipe. In my youth when I was into the band thing I had a friend who could pull it off most of the time but usually we used female vocals for that song.

I know the band but not the record or year and am not going to go google route. And additional hint for the band is "Wayne's World."

Aaaand we have a new contender

Ok, that one's gotta be a dead giveaway to everyone who ever watched Waynes' World (Wayne's World! Wayne's World! Party time! Excellent!)

Seems like another round of hints is needed:
2. Britain
10. Sweden

  1. Queen, a night at the opera (1975)

Correct. That leaves 1 album to decide who the second place goes to. Unless reborg answers that one too.

The very last hint (with 3 1/2 hours remaining):
10. The album is titled after something that Gaius Iulius Caesar did, (allegedly) describing it in his own words as "alea iacta est". Also a metaphor for "point of no return".

The contest is closed, no new solutions will be accepted.

The missing album was "Crossing the Rubicon" by The Sounds. If you ever listened to & liked Roxette, I'd suggest you check them out, there's a link in the first post in the thread.

Feel free to comment on the contest, or provide suggestions if you have them. If you want to suggest an album for the next round (and there'll definitely be one), please send me a PM instead (wouldn't want to give away anything ;))

Pludi,

I will PM you links to images and album names tomorrow for the next round.

Great contest. I'll gladly sponsor Bits to the next one or a future one (or more)..... just let me know.
