I am going to purchase Unix Network Programming by Stevens. The only question I have is which edition to buy. The older (early 90's) edition, or the newer (late 90's) edition. I know conventional thinking would point to the latest ( and greatest?), but I wanted to get some feedback from the forum.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Purchase the newest because it might have less typos 
Then again, purchase the old one if you want to have a few extra typos to challenge your programming skills

When Rich wrote the 2nd edition he added over 500 pages of material expanding the book into two volumes. Anytime you redo a project like that it gets better. But I don't agree that the first edition has fewer typos. The 2nd edition was too massive of a revision.
Now that Rich is no longer with us, two other guys have taken over the project. The first volume of edition 3 is out. I was browsing it at the bookstore. Among the new subjects I noticed: IPv6, Virtual Networks, Datalink programming, IPsec, and SCTP.
I'm going to get edition 3 and that's what I recommend. The only reason to go with edition 1 is to save money. You could probably pick one up cheap on ebay.
I'm sure Perderabo is correct if the second edition has 500 pages of expanded material. I have two copies the first edition and loved them. I don't recall if I ever purchaed or read the follow-on editions, it has been so long ago.
