What is your favorite programing language and why?
PHP is my favorite because its use to create websites....so thats why i always prefer PHP...!
Moved to "What's on your mind", as it's non technical. Also, maybe add a poll?
Personally, I prefer Perl for my coding, since I can write code the way I think, instead of how the language designers want me to think. Plus, I can use the same language for daemons, command line utilities, GUIs, and Web applications across platforms without a too great loss of speed.
Personally for me its Ruby
I think I'll have to say C. It's much chagrined as a language because it gives you actual pointers, actual memory, and the ability to remove your own toe should you say you want to, but there's powerful and fundamental UNIX features which would be nonsensical in any higher language, notably virtual memory.
It's also one of the only effective ways to genuinely extend the toolset you have for other languages. There's no shell builtin for ioctl.
For much the same reason it's also the common denominator for libraries: Write a Ruby library and it's only good for Ruby, write it in portable C and you can bind it to almost anything with a bit of work.
Years ago I was asked to rebuild a bunch of code generators written "for" Unix (running on Solaris and AIX) to work in Windows, so that our Sales people could demo our software on their laptops.
My boss asked me "how long do think that'll take?" Scratching my head, and completely underestimaging what I really thought it would take, I said "a week, maybe two" (these were complex programs, including Pro*C and everything!).
It took an hour.
The code, in C, was so well-written that in the end I changed a couple of Windows-specific header files and it compliled with barely so much as a compiler warning - and it worked.
I haven't programmed in C for 15-odd years, but I would count it among my favourite languages.
(and I also like PHP).
Assembly
Nah just playing...
My favorite programming language is C because great programmers code in C.
I prefer PHP, since most of my programming is on web applications.
My favorite language is C++ because it is the most basic language that anyone learns just like C and moreover it is an Object Oriented Language.
Programming languages are just tools.
Tool selection is based on the job, and constrained by what is available, and by what you feel comfortable with.
So based on knowing Basic, Cobol, Fortran, Dibol, RPG, PHP, Javascript, Foxpro, C, SQL, Postscript, Assembler, I would have to say that my first choice would be Foxpro.
C++ with QtCreator as IDE
PHP with NetBeans as the IDE.
PHP is best for me too. Its so simple and handy to me while preparing.
Python.
Here are two people in a row who answered a question about language by citing language plus IDE. This reminds me of my arguments at a previous job, so I must ask.
Do you consider the language and IDE to be separate or inseparable?
You see, at that former job, I found that some of my coworkers spread their code out across many source files by deriving classes from derived class that were derived from others, etc., each in its own file with half the code in the headers. The result was I had to look through a lot of files to find which class had a particular member variable or function and to follow the logic. By the time I found the answer, I forgot why I was looking.
When I complained, they said the problem wasn't their code, it was that I wasn't using the code browser. (They were using whatever Microsoft's called their IDE back then.) Look, they said, you just position the cursor over the thing of interest and the popup answers your question.
Ever since then, I've taken a strong stand against software that can't be understood without a particular tool. Source code should be readable and understandable whether you have a fancy IDE or are reading paper printouts.
PHP is my favorite one, the simpleness to use makes it preferable.
I like C++;
Learning C , so my favorite programming language is C
Javascript: no other language allows you to prototype a web application as fast as javascript. Once the designers and developers grasp the concept, they rewrite in PHP or C++.
ksh93, C, Java, awk, javascript and smalltalk are my favorites. I might add python to that list.
The ones I dislike the most are perl and C++.
I'm pleased to see a little disdain for C++.
I'm always cautious to say anything negative about OO in general and C++ in particular so I don't offend the ever-present crowd of programmers with fierce OO religious beliefs.
