Xserver won't come up on Solaris 8

Hi all,

My Ultra 10, running Solaris 8, is giving me problems :frowning: Currently, whenever it boots, the Xserver will not come up, saying "Xserver cannot be started on display 0".

I thought this might have something to do with OWconfig, and so poked it a little (moving params onto different lines), and so now it kinda gets halfway there... The display flicks between black-on-white console login, and white-on-black with eggtimer as mouse pointer..

Anyone experienced anything like this before, or have any ideas?

Thanks

did you check your error logs?

From Sunsolve:

After installing Solaris[TM] 2.6 on an Ultra[TM] 10 with an m64 graphics card
and rebooting, the following error message was displayed:

X-server cannot be started on display :0

Trying to start OpenWindows failed with the messages:

9 SUNWxxxxx bad class

instance, line 163 in
/usr/openwin/server/etc/owconfig

Resolution Top

  • Check to see what graphics card are installed by using the
    following command:

    # prtconf -F

  • Check the device driver packages for the graphics card.

    # pkginfo -l SUNW_package_name

  • If possible, get a copy of the /usr/openwin/server/etc/owconfig from
another Ultra 10 with the same graphic card.

The possible error message:

frame buffer , it was not defined in the file.

may be caused by the fact that the /usr/openwin/server/etc/OWconfig file
was copied from another Ultra that did not contain entries for the m64
framebuffer because the Ultra 10 did not have the framebuffer.

Thanks for the ideas

Since checking my Xerrors after playing the the m64config tool, the only errors are now connected to corrupt files to do with fonts... (which is odd).

Does anyone know which package I should reinstall in order to correct this?

Thanks!
Gemma

Hello all,

Further to my last post, I've managed to get the login screen up  For some reason it says "W" where the server name should be (the server's name is not W) and when I try to login to CDE, it loads the toolbars and background, then clicks back to the login screen.

This only occurs for non-root users.

The errors I'm finding in /var/dt/Xerrors are:

cannot find encoding file for iso8859-1

syntax error in /usr/openwin/lib/x11/fonts/encodings.dir

syntax error in
/usr/openwin/lib/x11/fonts/TrueType/ttmap/ttmaps.dir

There are no errorlogs created in the user's home directory :frowning:

Any ideas about this one?!

Thanks
Gemma

Ah....

After some further investigation I've discovered that the fonts problem as found in Xerrors doesn't appear to have much to do with the problem.

For some reason non-root-user .dtprofile files were owned by root. I changed them over to the user, and all was well.

For those interested in the solution to the original problem (the Xserver not coming up), I changed the /var/TIMEZONE file - changing all occurences of iso8859-15 to iso8859-1.

Thanks for all your help chaps
