.xinitrc

I want to install XPDE on solaris 8, i found a guide to do this but it says to edit the file ".xinitrc" in my home directory. I have no such file. How do i create this file?

Thnx

It is simply a text file.

Create and edit it using your favorite text editor.

ah thnx'

as u can see im a noob. (prob the stupidest one there is. lol)

Don't worry we all have to start somewhere.

One of the things about modern releases of *nix is that they have become much more "mass audience" oriented and as a result most of these type of detail are no longer required in order to get up and running. Most new users these days will never have to worry about what's in there xinitrc, whereas in the past you needed to edit it to get anything more than a X root window

Thnx for your help, I will try to make xpde work.

Its finals week and i dont have much time

Thank you

I made the .xinitrc file, but i couldnt save it in my /home directory. I saved the file in my user home directory however.
/export/home/user/

When i log on, it doesnt start xpde

IN the .xinitrc file i put the line:
/usr/share/xpde/bin/startxpde

You misunderstood the meaning of home directory. Your user home directory is /home/user (echo $HOME)

If you're using dt(graphical) login it won't ever launch.

Try logging in on the command line and typing xinit.

hmm i restarted my system and got a small problem.

it says:
Type control-d to proceed with normal startup,
or give root password for system maintenance:
(I gave the root password, control-d doesnt work)

single-user privelege assigned to /dev/console.
Entering System Maintenance Mode

(then the # sign comes and i dont know what to type. I tried "exit" but it brings me back to the same spot.)
thnx

Can you post the output before those lines? Than message usually only comes up when something need an fsck, you have rebooted into single user more or the inittab default is configured to single user mode.

I didnt know how much u wanted so i put it all up
(srry about the delayed reply but, i had midterms)
