I like Ubuntu and Archlinux.
Hello,
I use Mandriva 2010.1 + gnome.
I really wish Netflix would support Linux. My HTPC at home is a PC running Ubuntu and it is great, except I have to stream all my Netflix off of my PS3.
We still use Ubuntu for backend servers.
Hi,
I started with Mandrake 10 in 2004, tried Debian testing, then Ubuntu one year and a half then chose Archlinux at early 2006.
In 2008 tried PCLinuxOS light Minime, and kept on dual-booting since. I am now a PCLinuxOS contributor and Archlinux.fr moderator.
I had also tried : Pardus, Slackware, Slax, Foresight, Toutoulinux, Slitaz, and a few more.
I tried once a fork from Sun Opensolaris, and that has been fun ! But this is not the subject here, right ?
I have managed to work with a number of distribution. The first one was Redhat, and I work with different versions of Redhat starting with Redhat 4. I also worked with CentOS, which is basically the same as Redhat server.
In the last few years I worked with Ubuntu, Debian and SUSE's SLES.
My preference is Ubuntu for a number of reasons:
- It is very easy to install and maintain.
- The number of packages available for it is very big. The aptitude mechanism makes it very easy to search for packages and to install them. No need to search he WEB for an RPM and then find out that we require another RPM and search the WEB again. The aptitude service downloads all the packages on which the one you want is dependent on.
- Frequent updates. Of course, the user can decide which ones to install.
Well I must say SlackWare, I have tried:
- Ubuntu - Xubuntu - Kubuntu
- Debian
- OpenSUSE
- Fedora - Redhat
- ArchLinux
- SlackWare
And for some reason I like SlackWare the best, it reminds me in strange ways about BSD, when I first tried it a decade ago
I have Fedora 14 and UBUNTU 10.10 side by side
But I'm using fedora more often because I think it's much more powerful
ubuntu only because of the music stuff, specifically ubuntu studio.
i like red hat/centOS as well.
I use slackware from version 3.4 till now, i try redhat also and ubuntu .. well i don't like distributions that is much bigger and are so friendly ... If i want to be user friendly i will install windows not linux.
My vote for Ubuntu, as i'm using that right now.
+1 for ubuntu
Any customer can have any distro that he wants so long as it is Ubuntu.
for servers i prefer OEL5.5 (and soon to be OL6) based on redhat, easy install, easy configuring, so far seems good for virtualization.
For desktop/laptop i have only ever used fedora V3 and ubuntu, i have to say i prefer ubuntu out of the two as it had fewer issues - just downloaded the redhat version 6 software to try out though so will see what the future holds
I have now switched to Mageia 1.
It's a bit like Mandriva
For business we use Redhat
I voted 'Other'. I recently made the switch to Linux Mint 11 which I'm LOVING. It's been fantastic. Before that I used Ubuntu 11.04 and Kubuntu 11.04. Plasma Desktop on Kubuntu was nice, Ubuntu was not bad, but Mint has really impressed me thus far. I'm excited for the release of stable 12. I've run the RC on a live cd and it looks good, but I want to hold off installing it until the stable build comes out. I'm still new enough that I don't want to play around too much with unstable builds.
What's the main differences you see with Mint Linux? Everyone likes a different OS it seems but if you don't quantify why, there's not much said.
slackware , debian and arch
I too have recently switched from Ubuntu 11 to Mint 11. It installed without any configuration changes on a couple of laptops and a desktop, all buttons and wifi working perfectly. That is the thing I liked about Mint. The desktop is layed out well and it was no trouble for a Windows user to make the switch.
