Upgrade AIX without HMC

Hi all,
i would like to know if it's possible upgrade AIX 5.3 to 6.1 on a LPAR without use the HMC.
so i would like to know if i must use the console to do it or i can do all from the up&running system on LPAR.

Thanks in advance.

Mario

The HMC is not needed for the upgrade. Having some terminal to see if the box boots up can be helpful though and for booting from the 6.1 CD/DVD if you want to go via SMS menu.

Here are some links that might help:

IBM InfoCenter - Migrating to AIX 6.1
AIX UNIX system administration: Preparing to migrate to AIX 5.2, 5.3, or 6.x
IBM Systems Magazine - Installing and Upgrading to AIX 6.1

thanks

I am just couriers you have just one lpar in whole box
or there are multiple lpars on the frame and you just do not have HMC access ?

Zaxon is having right there iHMC not required the upgrade, but in case of problems you need to have some direct
access to lpars terminal.
Without it you can not start any tasks on that server,
even simple reboot is a risk.

I know that in the past on a Power 5 box, the virtual console was able to map out to the physical serial port allowing serial console access. Just saying. I think that still holds true. It's not the typical way... but it does mostly work. I think I had problem getting out of a session and back to the "top" though... but if it's just one lpar... then you're fine IMHO.
