Unable to access to p5 9131 AIX system

Hi,

I am very newbie with AIX system.
I have changed the default IP address 192.168.2.147 of HMC1 to our LAN IP address. I can ping to the new ip address but unable to access to ASMI again with the new ip address. Is there a way that I can connect to the console or can reset to the default IP address?

Please help!!!

Thanks,
L

Hello,
Have you try other ASMI port (HMC2)? Default address is 192.168.3.147...
Good luck.

What browser are you using? The connection to the ASMI port, when not using an HMC as proxy must be using so-called "low-grade" https (aka 40-bit encryption). This is a known issue with Power5, but was easy to get around with Firefox - until version 19 came out. FF, like IE, Omega and Chrome (the ones I have checked) have all removed support for 40-bit encryption. FF forums say it is for a better user interface (they were having troubles explaining low-grade encryption).
Actually, I was expecting to read that 40-bit was not safe enough to support - but they forget one premise of Security is Availability. And making something unavailable is also a security breach.
Anyway, I have resolved my issue by downloading FF 17.esr as this is going to be supported for a while (while v18 is not - that became v19).

Here is a link to v17.esr
Better is perhaps a link to all releases

Remember to turn off automatic updates, or like I, you will find yourself with a version that no longer supports 40-bit encryption. Also remember to check for updates - because with updates turned off, you will not be notified that there is a new update (as I just noticed, while writing this, that 17.esr has been updated).

OK - you have the browser - but it still is not working?

Last steps:
enter about:config in the URL, and say yes (i.e., I'll be careful, I promise) to warning.
in the search bar type: 40_md5
This should give two values - by default both are false . Toggle them to true (they turn bold) and try to access your page again.

Hope this helps!

Hi Citroen, I did try but did not work.

Hi MichaelFelt, I used IE 8 and FF 12. just upgraded to 17 but still get the same error
" Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s).
(Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap)

Thanks.

did you find the two settings in about:config and set those to true?
p.s. ff12 should have worked, but there have been issues, especially with the HMC since FF4 was released. (sigh)

Hi Michael, I am sorry that I skip about:config part :(. It works now. You're super :). Thanks very much!!!
Can I ask you more questions about this p5 system?

  1. I saw the amber light (system attention light) - what does that mean?
  2. I try to connect to the serial port (front panel), connected but nothing is displayed back. Did I miss anything?

Thanks again.
L

I have never used to front panel serial port. Use the one in the back. Speed is 19200 baud, not 9600.

The amber light means "something happened", e.g., the power cord was pulled before it was completely in OFF state. To turn this off in ASMI:

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the amber lights - warning b/c power cable got disconnected.

The Serial Porting Setup is 19200, 8, 1, None but did not get SMS menu for neither front or back serial port. If I hit enter, only see these @@@@@

Thanks for your help so far.
L

The SMS menu is only active on serial port when system is in powerdown (i.e., only the service processor is running).

In other words, once you power on you wont see the ASMI menu (for long) on the serial port.

When it does work, when you connect you see nothing, press enter and you should see something like:

michael@x121:[/home/michael]cu -l tty0

Sorry, I am very newbie with AIX.

There is no graphic card so I can't connect the monitor to it. I need to find the way to log on to the server to enable ssh, rsh or telnet.

I follow this instruction from IBM web site to setup the machine.

would you please hint me some directions?

Thanks so much again!

How did you install AIX (or VIOS)? If you can answer that question for me I should be able to come up with some suggestions.

p.s. If you have not installed anything yet, maybe you need to do a factory reset. This is a demo video I did back in 2006/2007 (I did not do vocals then, was hard enough to make a video (for me)).

This may help you along - along the lines of the install document you referenced.

Hope this helps!

We purchased this AIX server with AIX 7.1 version installed from one vendor that we used to order HP servers. He prefered me to this forum for help!
I don't have the CD to reinstall.
What should be the correct Power On/Off System settings if the OS AIX 7.1 was installed ? Should it be "Fast, Temporary, Normal, Continue to Operating System, Running, Power off, C (for i5/OS partition mode boot)?

Maybe sound stupid question but I'd like to understand that if I reset to factory default and reinstall the OS (if I have the CD). I will see the process on ASCII terminal, correct? After done installing OS, I can setup IP address for the server and install SSH?

Thanks.

I am unable to access your demo video. I saw the video on Youtube. Thanks.

Sorry, the page you have requested cannot be found.

You can search this site if you are looking for something specific about Linux or UNIX.

it prepended http://www.unix.com/ to the URL. Thanks for pointing this out.

And great that you found in on Youtube, that is where it is stored.

So, also available via: p5 factory reset - YouTube

But also important - did it help?

You do not have to reinstall AIX, the factory reset affects the supervisor/hypervisor, not the information stored on disk.

p.s. Your vendor should have provided the DVD, or maybe he gave you a system to play with, but not a licensed install of AIX.

does the information panel say HMC=0 when the system is running?

If not, the serial console should be active, but at an unknown baud rate (should be 19200, but could be anything it sounds like).

If it says HMC=0, the system expects an HMC and the serial port is disabled when AIX is powered on - as a security measure.

It is also possible that the serial port is defective. Speak with the supplier re: warranty/support.

Hi Michael,

you mean after resetting to default, I suppose to see something on the terminal screen? after reset to factory default, it's the same.
the front panel shows 01 N V=F and below V is T.

Power On/Off System
Current system power state: On
Current firmware boot side: Temporary
Current system server firmware state: Running

System boot speed:Fast
Firmware boot side for the next boot:Temporary
System operating mode:Normal
AIX/Linux partition mode boot:Continue to OS
Boot to system server firmware:Running
System power off policy:Automatic
i5/OS partition mode boot:A

I have the 2 activation code. I can activate VET but don't know where to activate POD code
I did contact the vendor but they no help.

What should I do next?
Thanks.

VET - that is to activate the Virtualization Features.
POD - to activate processors. I am not a hw guy, but as I understand it, A Model 9131-52a does not have dynamic activation of the processors. They are activated at the factory (or you would even be able to start, your supplier would not have been able to install, etc..)

You say you received/bought it - and it sounds like "pre-installed" with AIX 7.1.

I have a similar model the p5-51a (thinner and 2 processors, you can go to 4, and have more disks and/or perhaps you have a deskside.).

So, when the system is turned off - but plugged in (main unit is off, but ASMI web interface is working) - if the serial port is not responding at 19200 baud, either your cable is defective, or the serial port is defective.

After the firmware reset - the port will be active with power applied and the machine in "OFF" status.

FYI: I have VIOS installed in my initial partition - this is what gets started when I boot.

What is unclear to me is what you received. A stand-alone 9131-52a with AIX 7.1 as a single partition, or with VIOS installed (and sounds like no AIX).

I would ask your supplier to verify that the serial port functions (and also verify my serial cable is working - e.g., add a null modem just in case you have a straight cable atm). - Or ask your provider to supply/load a serial cable that they know works.

---------- Post updated at 01:44 PM ---------- Previous update was at 01:35 PM ----------

When I login via the serial cable - this is the dialog, and settings I have.
These were set by the installation.

# lsattr -El vty0 -a speed
speed 19200 N/A True
#

From the command tty - you can see the firmware is managing the access (hence the name vty0 , not tty0 ).

In short, we are really down to basics. Is the hardware working!?

The "other" way they can help is to provide an HMC for you to configure the system with (HMC creates a console connection via vty0 and the service processor. The is a GUI interface I dislike. When working with a HMC use (easier) the command vtmenu , otherwise the command mkvterm .

Hope this helps!

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your explanation.
I checked with the vendor. The sale guy said it's AIX 7.1 re-installed.
But he was unable to contact the support people to help.
i5/OS partition mode boot has A, B, C , D so which one should be the correct partition? If it sets to incorrect partition, will is display something on the serial console?

I was using RJ45 serial cable (the one for cisco router).
It might be not a right one for this server. I just purchase a cross serial cable (null modem). I will try it out when I am in the office. It has 2 serial ports so I can use either one, correct?

Thanks.
L

No, serial port 0 (or 1, whatever the lowest number is).

The A/B/C/D - just leave at default. That has particular meaning for IBM i (aka i5 or OS/400). It says which whether to boot from permanent or temporary firmware image.

Default is to boot from temporary. The concept is if a firmware change has unexpected issues you can IPL again on the permanent side (i.e. the old firmware).

At a certain point in time, the temporary side gets copied to permanent and they are the same. When the system comes up (AIX) run the command lsmcode . It will tell you what level both sides are at. (No clue what the C/D does. When I did a bit of OS/400 admin there was only an A/B side, so I am guessing C/D is just an extension of that.) - In short, leave that at the current (default) setting.

I got it work with the Belkin Pro Serial cable.

I am very appreciated and many thanks for your help Michael.

I am glad it was something simple - just a cable . Need to remind myself to remember that that basic rule has not changed in 30 years!

As you say, AIX + Console = Nightmare, still.... IBM!
