Sun v215 ALOM Reset

Hi all,

I got a v215 but the login credentials are unknown. I plug the serial management RS232-RJ45 and get the output on the terminal. I reseted NVRAM and battery but I can't use the default login still. After these operations the output from boot is as such ;

SC Alert: SC Request to send Break to host.

Waiting a couple of minutes at login prompt should lead to sc> but it is not the case here. I also used break for this purpose without luck.

What do you think might be going on ?

As your console output says, entering the two characters:

 #.

should land you at the:

sc>

prompt. Perhaps enter a carriage return there to get a response.

After I type

#.

and press return, I get the login prompt back again.

But that should be a ALOM login prompt.

You are using the serial console terminal?

Post the login prompt so we can see what it looks like.

Serial management port that's correct.

If you've reset the ALOM then the login credentials (userid/password) should be either:

admin/changeme

or

root/changeme

Tried both with no success.

Do you think that there is a Solaris OS installed on this machine?

Do you have the Solaris DVD media?

---------- Post updated at 06:00 PM ---------- Previous update was at 05:55 PM ----------

That Login prompt certainly looks like an ALOM prompt to me.

I am not sure if an OS is installed or not but I do have the media. Is it possible to boot the disc without accessing the ALOM ? It is possible to remove this passwd if I am capable of doing that.

See this:

C H A P T E R 3 - Configuring ALOM

Seems like the default password on a V215 (after resetting the ALOM) is based on the chassis serial number.

Does taking out the battery and waiting for some time (results in time/date reset) resets the ALOM ? I tried chassis serial (Sys S/N) doesn't work either.

No, that won't reset ALOM.

Try removing both power chords for a few minutes and then hitting 'esc' as ALOM is booting.

I unplugged both power cords and then plugged them again. Pushed Esc at boot and tried to Reset SC but it still keeps on asking login prompt :

re: serial number -- you did get the serial number from the chassis or where?
Edit:
It looks to me like the box failed to post - that means a hardware error. Do you have support from Oracle?

Assuming that the hardware is not faulty (which is a possibility) I think we need to try and get a 'ok' prompt in order to install Solaris 10.

So try this.....

  1. Power up the machine from cold (no power) and don't touch it at all. Let the ALOM boot and when the menu appears don't touch anything. Many a ALOM firmware will drop to a 'ok' prompt after a timeout if you don't touch anything. After five minutes try hitting 'return' and/or entering CTRL-Q in case the console is x-off'd.

  2. After the menu is displayed trying keying CTRL-Fn-F12
Do you get any response. Cold power up a few times and enter that keystroke at various different stages of boot.

If we can install Solaris you can use 'scadm' with the OS running to configure the ALOM. I'm beginning to think that you won't achieve it any other way.

If you do manage to get to a 'ok' prompt try the command 'boot' first in case there's already an installed OS on the system.

The older V series machines don't have a default service processor password or login. You need to install Solaris using the serial port of the server and NOT the service processor. After you have Solaris running, you can configure the ALOM with the scadm utility, which is for all administration of the ALOM.

C H A P T E R 7 - Using the scadm Utility

If that doesn't work, I have to check some internal documents and see if there is a workaround. Haven't worked on a V215 for years...

@DukeNuke - oops, long time no see a V215 - you are right no default passwords.
Thanks for the correction.

I just checked the internal documents... There is a "kind of default" login when you connect for the first time.

The login should be admin and the last 8 digits of you SN# should be the password. I've never tried that... For more information use the Oracle support website and search for Doc ID 1005438.1

Best,
DN2
