I have a e450 sun server that I just started up and I connect my laptop to the serial connection using a null modem cable and it just does not connect.
I use hyperterminal, I dont connect a keyboard to the sun machine?
Any ideas?

You may try using the Serial B at the server end or use a Tera Term instead of Hyperterminal
If you can access your E450 over the network run:
$ eeprom | grep device
and ensure that input-device and output-device are set to ttya, or if you are using the serial port of a remote admin. (ILOM) card they may be set to rsc, they may be set to keyboard and display respectively if your server has a frame buffer (graphics card) in which the serial port will not be the console.
It could be screen/keyboard or ttya/ttya..
But assuming your display is currently taken over by your monitor and keyboard, there's no way for you to redirect now to serial.. unless you plug out those devices and reboot the system(connecting your notebook to the serial A/B)
