and continues the normal boot process and shows the login screen.
Is there something I'm missing?

While troubleshooting I find it's useful to disable 'auto-boot?'.
The error, "Cant open boot device " means there could be something wrong with the media drive or the DVD. Double check the DVD in another machine if possible. Your device paths look OK to me.

Its not a good practise to give "y". you should type "n" for NO . reset-all from the ok> prompt and try again. It should work.
can you boot failsafe console from DVD
it will ask something like : find Os do you want to mount it rw on a y n
enter N
then manually mount root partition
then edit
vi /etc/shadow
As you truncated its name (TOSHIBA XM..) , did you check the drive is actually a DVD reader ?
U60 came standard with a CD drive, DVD was optional.
