Restoring old movies using artificial intelligence

I often wind down by watching a film-noir movie and with the current level of technology it should be possible to restore these often degraded films:

  • despeckling
  • alignment of consecutive frames
  • increasing contrast
  • image sharpening

I can imagine professional restoration companies will have some of their work sourced out through the use of artificial intelligence tooling, now that is becoming more capable as well as more affordable. Maybe someone is already familiar with these technologies? Maybe one day it can be done in real-time? Maybe music can be artificially enhanced too? Or unintended ambient noises removed? It is easy to tread the line between the spirit of an original artistic expression and something that might be qualified as derivative work.

Algorithms that smoothen or sharpen images have been around for some time. Yes, they will become real-time soon; auto-focus and ANC are already there.

AI is supposed to create images (or music) that are as good as (or better than) human painters (or musicians). There is hardly an interest in speed.
