I was under the impression that the Header of the prtdiag output shows the hardware vendor information in the section between System Configuration and sun4u/sun4us. But on some Solaris machines which are running on Fujitsu hardware, the vendor is shown as Sun Microsystems in this command's output header. Excerpt of the command output follows -
System Configuration: Sun Microsystems sun4us Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER250 1x SPARC64 V
System clock frequency: 220 MHz
Memory size: 1024 Megabytes
Is there any single reliable way to get the correct hardware vendor information on Solaris machines? Can you please also post some examples if possible?
I want to get information of the hardware vendor that the particular Solaris system is running on. So if it's shown wrong in the output of prtdiag (which I use currently), then it isn't much helpful.
I was wondering if there's another way to get this information then. Some other command or some file that can be read?
That doesn't make a difference. Both companies Fujitsu and Sun/Oracle are aware. Support for a PP will usually go to Fujitsu, but not always. It's all a matter of who is contracted.
You can always take a look at what the Fujitsu "madmin" administration utility will show you. Probably the same.
Often prtdiag will tell you the vendor, but sometimes Fujitsu hardware will just say Sun. If think I remember seeing that on some T series machines in the past.
Basically, if it says Fujitsu on the prtdiag output you can be sure it's Fujitsu. If it says Sun there is a chance it's actually Fujitsu hardware sometimes. Your organization should have it documented somewhere in their inventory.
If you're not sure, and you don't have physical access to the server you can always check if the Fujitsu support tools are installed. Assuming whoever installed the OS initially set it up correctly they should have installed the Fujitsu support tools. For example, you should see fjsnap on there, which is Fujitsu's equivalent to Sun's Explorer.
