Printer port

I installed an old laser printer using a print server. I can use from windows but not from unix. I set up the printer in unix as a remote printer and can ping the print server from a unix promt. I am thinking that I must open a port to the print server. Any suggestions?

Which way did you set up the print spooler in Unix?

Using 'rlpconf', CUPS or hpnp??

If you are using 'rlpconf', check the settings in '/etc/printcap' for 'rp=' setting.
Make sure that the Remote spooler name is correct for your print spooler device.

As for the print spooler device, what make/model?

I know that for most HP Jetdirect units, the 'rp=' should normally be set to 'raw' (with 'raw1', 'raw2' and 'raw3' for most 3 port units.)

I used rlpconf finally got it to work by using the correct printer name lp1 as per the print server config file.
