Prerequisites for installing VIOS

Hello, I am trying to setup LPARs on a p7 system.

There is an existing install of AIX 7.1 that we have been using for various tasks. Can I install VIOS on top of this existing OS without any other prep work? Or is it advisable to install a fresh copy of AIX before installing VIOS on it?

edit: My question was based off an incorrect assumption. I thought VIOS was an application to be installed on top of an operating system, but it appears to be a mini OS of its own.

VIOS is built on top of AIX 6.1 - installation of VIOS is basically an mksysb install, so by definition, you will overwrite any existing installation.

As long as the version of VIOS is new enough for your hardware the installation should proceed without problems.

Note: if you have an additional disk to install to, you can install VIOS on the extra disk, and after booting you can use VSCSI to create a client partition that can boot from your current AIX 7.1 rootvg.
