Partition size calculations

Hi guys,

I have an V100 server and I'm about to install solaris 8 on it (I have 10 on currently but most of my work is on 8 so I'm going to that).

It would be easy for me to post system specs and get a recommendation, but what I'd like is to know HOW to calculate so that I can set up other systems in the future.

Can someone please help?

Many thanks,
Stin

The rule of thumb is quite simple. Make the partitions large enough for not risking being full but not too large for not wasting disk space ...

Of course, this rule has no definitive solution so what is broken in the first place is the partitioning concept.

Hopefully ZFS pools bring an elegant alternative to that mess.

Keep Solaris 10, install your whole Solaris 8 platform into a branded zone (assuming your applications do not already work on Solaris 10) backed by ZFS and you are set.
