OpenSSH always ask for password

Hello together,
I have a Problem with openssh on AIX 5.3.
We have a big amount of AIX-hosts that run with openssh but one dont!
Every time we try to connect via ssh to the host, we get a password prompt.
The myth ist, that there is no Error or somthing else.

Here the output of ssh -vvvv to the host:

Has somebody a good idea?

Hi,
Are you sure that you put right public key to the authorized_keys2 file on the host ?
It looks like public key is missing in authorized_keys2 file of user which is used to connect to the server and that's why you asked to enter password.
And I don't know why you have your private key like this:

debug1: Trying private key: /usr/local/ssh/root/id_dsa

I think that should be in the home directory (under .ssh/) of each user who creates pair of keys.

Yes, Im sure.
Ive copied the key again and agian to the host but with no effect.
On all other there ist the same key.

From which information do you think, that the key is missing?

The file in /usr/local/ssh/root/id_dsa is a question of design and not my work!
But it works normally.
Here a connection to an other host:

You are right, that looks like this problem.
But the authorized_keys2 is correct. Is ist possible, that sshd looks for it at another place and not in /.ssh/ ?

Please , check those two lines on your host (where you try to connect with key) in /etc/ssh/sshd_config

PubkeyAuthentication yes
#AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys

Ok, I change the settings from default

#PubkeyAuthentication yes
#AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys

to this

PubkeyAuthentication yes
AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys2

restart the sshd but again with no effect!?

This is strange. I just noticed that i have as well in config file .ssh/authorized_keys and those keys are being read from .ssh/authorized_keys2  and its working.

EDIT: Just found that if you leave commented out this line "#AuthorizedKeysFile" in /etc/ssh/ssd_config file, ssh will look for both authorized_keys or authorized_keys2 in .ssh/ file

And I can see this line in your first output

debug1: After function load_identity_file

I don't know what is that but I don't have it in my output's.

Found something about that function: "When using publickey authentication, the private key is loaded from an
IdentityFile using ssh2connect.c's load_identity_file() function. A
stat(2) is used to ensure that the file exists, and then the key is
loaded. "

And what about your permissions ?

-rw-r--r-- 1 root system 1000 May 26 12:27 authorized_keys2

It seems, that the permissions are right too:

-rw-r--r--- 1 root system 1112 Jan 12 2009 authorized_keys2

In which format is you authorized_keys2?
My is in ssh-dss (first words in file). But I think, that is not relevant.

This:

[lpar_a07:root:/home/root/.ssh:] cat authorized_keys2

ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAABIwAAAQE= root@*****
ssh-dss AAAAB3NzaC1kc3MAAA= root@*****

Ok, Ive only one entry, but I think thats ok.
Im very confused and have no idea what I should do!

New day, new idea!

Now I have enabaled debug mode of the sshd on the destination-host.
When I try to connect, the following Error occurred:

debug1: trying public key file //.ssh/authorized_keys
  debug1: fd 5 clearing O_NONBLOCK
Authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for file /
  debug1: restore_uid: 0/0
  debug1: temporarily_use_uid: 0/0 (e=0/0)
debug1: trying public key file //.ssh/authorized_keys2
  debug1: fd 5 clearing O_NONBLOCK
Authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for file /

But I dont know what is wrong in the permissions of / !?
Im confused, that the keyfile is searched in //.ssh/authorized_keys2
Why are there two slashes (//)?

But what permissions and ownership do you have on / ?

I just read on another forum , there was one guy he got the same problem like you but on his /home/user directory. He had on that directory write permissions for group. After he removed it it worked.

Or you can try put/change this setting in your /etc/ssh/sshd_config file

StrictMode No

This is what it does :
StrictModes yes
The option StrictModes specifies whether ssh should check user's permissions in their home directory and rhosts files before accepting login. This option must always be set to yes because sometimes users may accidentally leave their directory or files world-writable.

Problem solved!

The problem was, that root was not owner of / !!

drwxr-xr-x 43 3211 system 4096 May 27 08:48 .

Why the hell is not clear but I change it to root and now it works fine!

@phobus: Thank you for your support. I think without you I never found the error. THANKS a lot!

Bye,
Heiko

I am glad you solved it , and you are welcome  .

A final thought on this. Whilst the Unix Standard is for roots home directory to be /. You can avoid a lot of this sort of problems by giving root a home directory of /home/root - which is always owned by root.
