I need to install a license key for synergy which requires the server's serial number to be provided but since I'm installing it on a local zone, would the installation work?

Usually, software still requiring such data use the hostid, not the serial number.
i'm quite positive, the license vendor requested me for the serial number.
There is no single API, if any, to retrieve the serial number depending on the Solaris release, the hardware used and the optional packages installed.
Possible ways are sneep, prtdiag, smbios, ipmitool, ...
Therefore, I still think your software vendor is either asking for an hostid or just not enforcing the serial number binding.
Why not directly asking him about the zone case anyway ?
I think that sneep supposed to be the simplest way.
