I am trying to learn networking, so I am trying to set up my home for that.
I have a internet connection from a local ISP. The speed is reaching close to 1.5Mbps (minimum).
I live in Chennai, India. Which modem-cum-router you suggest is best on coverage? (little low on budget too 
max: 2500 INR)

What type of Internet connection have you? DSL, ASDL, VDSL or what?

If you want to learn about networking, I would strongly suggest setting up a virtual lab and playing around with the devices. Have a look at Cisco Modeling Labs:

I think you can get started with free CCO login.
Start with Cisco as it probly the best path to learn abt networking.
