New-gen gaming consoles

I've been thinking of buying a gaming console. I've narrowed down to two options and of course they are Sony PS3 and XBOX 360. Both have equally good reviews. Most games are released for both PS3 as well as XBOX.

I did search the forums for a similar thread and found this. The highest number of votes for a gaming console was 7 and that was for Sega Master. Now I wouldn't want to play Mortal Kombat 2 or Sonic The Hedgehog, would I! (I have emulators on my PC for that :D)

I'm confused. Let me know your thoughts.

I think it is an age factor in the answers in that thread. Most of those folks stopped gaming on consoles a long time ago.

This might be more relevant - console sales are falling:

You may be stuck with an antique in short order.

Thanks jim_mcnamara. Yeah, I may be stuck with an antique piece but there isn't any newer console lined for launch in near future, say a PS4?

and I have never used a gaming console

It's a toss up between the XBox360 and the Playstation 3. I have both, but I play the XBox360 more. Games seem to look better on the XBox360, and the online gameplay seems to be a little better. But the PS3 doubles as a Bluray player, and has builtin 3D support for games.

I bought a PS3. Got a good thanksgiving deal. A 250 GB PS3 bundled with games (inFamous and Unchartered Dual pack) for $199.95 (excl. tax)

Gaming on mobiles and tablets is where the investments are being made. Add to that that most mobile phone users never owned a game console makes it hard to see a bright future for game consoles.

True, but I'm sure hardcore gamers would despise playing games on mobiles and tablets. I may be wrong. With improving graphics on handheld devices and busy lifestyle of people, it is indeed hard to see a bright future for gaming consoles.

Absolutely! We would not have the powerful graphic cards flooding the main street shops if it were not for gaming on PCs and consoles. Trust you will have many fun-packed hours on your PS3!
