Need to recover 'root' password

Dear All,

I have lost my data backup server's root password, just have a normal login username and password ..but i need to get back my root passwd....any1 can help me out plz :confused:

But for linux i can't edit /etc/passwd without knowing a root passwrod......and cant boot my server too..

is there any other option to recover the root password ???

You have posted your question in a solaris forum. Tell us exactly what distro you are using and maybe someone who knows it can help you. But if the box won't even boot, you have a real problem there.

Actually...i need to know the method both for a Linux and SUN OS server (both r text based). And SUN OS version is 5.8 using a SUN Netra 440

you have to boot the system using cdrom/dvd to single user and remove the encrypted passwd from the /etc/shadow file
