monitoring software

i am looking for a really good monitoring solftware for solaris .
i need it to be installed on a server and accessed from a client application on windows , with some nice GUI interfaces .

thanks

you could use the Sun Management Center. there should be a GUI for windows....

greetings pressy

I'd personally steer clear of SMC. It has a history rife with DOS attacks, overflows and other exploits.

Nagios (http://www.nagios.org) is worth looking at. Nagios is a host and service monitor designed to run under the Linux operating system, but works fine under most *NIX variants as well. The monitoring daemon runs intermittent checks on hosts and services you specify using external "plugins" which return status information to Nagios. When problems are encountered, the daemon can send notifications out to administrative contacts in a variety of different ways (email, instant message, SMS, etc.). Current status information, historical logs, and reports can all be accessed via a web browser. Although the GUI is not windows based, it is accessible via any web browser.

Keith

kduffin ,
is there a binary executable version for nagios , rather than going through the steps of configuring and making .
just one more thing i went through the site you posted , there is nothing about that nagios running under solaris .
i heared from a freind of mine about a package called bigbrother , any body used it ??????
cheers
thanks

I don't know of anyone that maintains precompiled binaries for Solaris. The instructions for compile Nagios are fairly simple and you can download the binaries for Solaris specific plugins here.

Big Brother is not a bad product, quite extensible and in use all over the place. You can find more information about Big Brother at http://www.bb4.org/

Cheers,

Keith

thanks kduffin ,

do i need to have appache installed perior than nagios to work ?
