Major differences between AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux

Hi All,

I want to know the OS level differences between AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux

Apart from the vendor, H/w and command differences, any other significant points.

regards,

guru Charan

Buy a book, otherwise I'll be writing one in this forum explaining the differences. Of course there are so many I wouldn't know where to start anyways.

About all that is left is the kernel. Yep, differences there too.

To cut long story short.
these are completely different systems that happened to represent virtually all branches of UNIX and despite they share some basic approaches the system architecture is quite different. Above the basic command set, the system management issues solved differently, configuration managed differently and volume management is different as well.
Solaris is the only real survivor of System V type, has huge number of system improvements, and on a modern equipment allows changing the CPUs and system memory without stopping system. Has great, very advances permission model and as all Sys V uses run levels. It offers systems from desktops to hundreds CPU supercomputers. Very exciting.
HP UX is BSD based system, very reliable and comfortable. However the expendability is limited. As HP acquired Compaq that acquired DEC, they messed up with this entire legacy.
AIX is superb system in a middle with very cool Tivoli extensions, very developed set of hardware/software improvements and extremely easy to use management tools.
Linux is by design is garage band project, that utilizes run level approach and despite as for today, offers many advanced features, since has no dedicated hardware manufacturer suffers from it.

As I said, the systems are similar up to some level, but completely different in the way they managed and maintained.
hope it helps.

I dont think I would post a query if I had to buy a book. Not knowing answer is not a guilt. If you dont know to start, dont start.

Dear gurukottur
I think it is better always see the things from above as our most senior people in this forum mix their answers with mystisism. If somebody respond me in this way i always welcome him i could ask him which book do you recommend ?? for sure everybody has a way to express a reality. Sorry I am not advising just as I am always respecting seniors and the way they teach me and from each of these people i have received extereme valuable guides and solutions.
Thanks and regards.

I think asking such open ended questions don't make much sense. It would be like me coming in here and asking how unix works. There are tons of books and webpage resources. People need to look at those resources before asking questions. If you have looked and studied and you're still having difficulties then by all means post your questions. Furthermore, just because someone doesn't answer the question doesn't mean they don't know. Being lazy is no excuse.

The phrase you are looking for is "open source". Not being chained to the whims of a single vendor of a single platform is something a few strange people consider an advantage, by the way.

My feeling is that this thread is headed towards being "idle chatter that does not contribute to the knowledge base" (if it's not already there). I am also concerned that the thread is crossing the line with respect to:

(8) No BSD vs. Linux vs. Windows or similar threads.

So I will close the thread.
