mailx Question

I am using mailx command. It works fine. And the receiver gets 'From' information as MySelf@Sent_server. This 'Sent_server' is picked up from /etc/hosts - third alias for loghost (dev.abc.ltd). The entry is as under

11.22.33.44 dev_sys dev_system dev.abc.ltd loghost

The issue is that is there any way this From server can show IP address? Like spatel@11.22.33.44 (instead of spatel@dev.abc.ltd)?

Thanks

mail and mailx use the sendmail configuration to send mail.

It is difficuly to change from mailx to sendmail as there are hundreds of programs.

The advice from Padow was about masquerading the mail domain in sendmail which would ripple through to the mailx command, though changing sendmail configuration can be hard work.
Beware that spoofing the email address can cause Virus Scanners and Spam Filters to filter the mail.

There are many versions of mailx. Please post what Operating System and version you are using.

You cannot have a colon character in an email address. It is a rule. What you are asking is impossible. What are you actually trying to achieve?

There are two servers having the same alias. So just looking at the 'From' field it is not possible to determine from which server the mail has come - unless one goes to 'Message Options'. The ultimate gols is to find a way to know from which server the mail has come without going to Message Options.
