Latest AIX Service Pack

Hello, I am trying to install Oracle 11g on my AIX server and it requires at a minimum OS level 5300-05-06. I am currently at 5300-05-01. What do I need to upgrade this? Where can I get this sp? What are the step to install this? I am a DBA not sysadmin. We no longer have a sysadmin. Lucky me...

Thank you,

  • David

I did a search on the OS level you are looking for and found this link:
IBM Support: Fix Central

Since you don't have any experience as a sysadmin you might want to check into contracting this upgrade out. If not start searching on this forum for the steps you would take. The first one would be to perform a backup. I am not an experienced sysadmin, but with searching this forum and the IBM website I was able to perform an upgrade of our 5.2 OS. Also if you have support they are a good start. Good Luck.

dkranes,

Installation of patches is easy but be careful with patch level. Make sure you download the correct patch level for your hardware.

before you can install Patch . you need to install the IBM updateinstaller and from their you can install the patch.

It is noted in the IBM boulder site so just read a little bit. "Make sure you have backup"

2 suggestions:

  1. mksysb
  2. don't commit installation

Don't commiting installation of service packs or technology levels only makes sence if you make sure that no other software is in applied state. Working in AIX support you can not believe how many times I have seen a machine where we need to revert the installation of particular service pack or technology level by rejecting the APPLYED packages only to find that pritty much all other software installed on the machine is in that state and has never been COMMITTED, regardless of how long ago it was installed.

So yes - only apply packages, but at least commit them before installing next time. Also when you only apply packages make sure as well that you save the replaced files.
