I have interviewed in Nepali ISP companies like Vianet. And Nepalese vendor(hardware vendor to IT clients) companies like Max International. And have worked in another top Nepali company. One thing in common is how we are expected to be available 24x7. Is this the norm worldwide. I mean it would be better if you could keep a shift where person is available at that time and pay him based on that.
That kind of toxic work life balance is not what I want. Honestly, sometimes it feels I picked the wrong profession.
Many Nepali ISPs expect 24/7 availability, but this isn’t normal everywhere. Most countries use proper shifts or on-call duty with extra pay. The issue is the work culture, not your profession.
In IT production environment, it is quite normal 24/24 - 7/7… It doesn’t mean you are to work all the time, it means you have 3x8h work shifts, and regularly you are to work on the late night one, most companies pay differently late night hours as compensation.
When it comes to tough times, that means vacation, with less personal, you usually have the operators and likes working, and one/two level 2-3 on-call duty, the same, each in turn will be on duty except if you are unlucky like I was at a time: no one can replace you because no one has your knowledge of the environment, so you have to accept to be on-call duty every time it is critical production, till you find a peer you can share your knowledge…
