What information do you have about the person you want to find its IP address? If you know the name of the host i.e. www.unix.com then a simple nslookup www.unix.com or host www.unix.com will give you the IP of the host.
The ping is a programme that takes advantage of the icmp ECHO_REQUEST
to elicit a responce from another computer. It is used to see if a host in connected to the net.
