Install HP UX

Hey whats up all of you pro's i have one question for you im not to familiar with HP UX 11i, but i would like to load it on my home machine. I am sure this is a dumb question but is there any special hardware requirements. I have reloaded the sysem at my work on a L class 9000 well not exactly by my self but i am very interested in learing the in's and out's of hp systems and my job is to dam cheep to send me for training.

I also was interested in purchaseing a Unix workstation but on hp's website the dam things are 5,000.00+ dollars. if there are certin hardware requirements could sombody point me in the right direction as far as what i would need to purchase to build my own system.

Thanks

As far as the hardware requirements, HP-UX currently only runs on hp9000 systems. You have to use HP hardware, sorry.

But keep your eye out on eBay and similar sites - I bought a decent old HP workstation on eBay a few months back for 25 bucks, US dollars. After shipping, I had bought a killer workstation for about $40.

any particular model i should keep an eye on ?

Not really, as long as it runs HP-UX. I have seen a good number of very affordable 715/80 and 715/100 machines up; just make sure to check the description to make sure HP-UX runs on it - many come with it pre-installed (Mine came with 10.20).

do you know where i can get any Evaluation OS's of HP UX or anything that will give me some practice with ux, i have found a couple of systems on ebay for a decent price i will have to wait to see if i get it thought. thanks for all of your help

Most of the systems I've seen on eBay come with HP-UX installed, but you may be able to get your hands on some media through HP if you need to. If you get the system, please post back, and I'll help you find it.

LivinFree is very correct HPUX 11.i only runs on a few types of HPUX specific hardware, the V, L, N, Keystone and Superdome Classes of boxes.

HPUX 11.0 will run on some workstations depending on the versions, however, HPUX 10.x versions are very good for training and learning.

Its kind of like buying an old 200MHZ PC to run Linux on. I actually have a 200MHZ box that runs Mandrake on 98MB of memory and 8Gig harddrive!

Look out for auctions in your area. Some government agencies and local municipalities sell old systems.

Good luck! I hope you find something that will help you.

HPUX runs on Itaniums now as well(although i really do not recommend these systems), the processor type on 95% of the HPUX machines is PA-RISC.

10.20 was not very y2k friendly you will want to be running 11.00 r2 or better. It is not technically supported on 7xx era machines but I have run it perfectly fine even on old Apollo workstations.
Bang for the buck get yourself and older J or C class, If you get one of these note that many do NOT come with an X capable video card(although they can easily be found cheap). Typically any of the workstations with visualize in the title will.

Here is a machine I just bought myself for home it cost $363 US:
9000/J5000 Visualize Workstation w/ 2 x 440MHz PA-RISC 8500 CPU's
512MB, 120MHz SDRAM (1 x 512MB Memory Module)
1 x 18GB Ultra2 Wide LVD SCSI 10k RPM Disk Drive
1 x 9GB Ultra2 Wide LVD SCSI 10k RPM Disk Drive
1 x FX4 Graphics Card w/ video adapter
32x max CD-ROM Drive
110v Power Cord (USA/Canada)
HP-UX 10.20, 11.00, or 11i Operating system pre-loaded to the boot drive

Its pretty sweet

Actually, for Midrange systems, Itanium is a very small step up for Pa-risc boxes and a very robust improvement.

For newer Cell-based systems, it is only a matter of replacing the CPU and upgrading the firmware and a few other modifications. If you have an older cell-based box, its better to buy the new hardware... upgrading would be difficult without gutting an older superdome or keystone.

I just had a class from HP regarding HPUX 11i v2 which was very enlightening... 11i v2 (11.23) is a vast improvement over 11i v1.

Of course, Midrange boxes arent good for personal use!

This is true at the 54xx/74xxlevel you will see very little difference and there is a slight improvement in processor performance. The initial Itanium machines 8440's.I was sent as test models all had a very nasty Cell Board issue when Npar'd. We never kept them. also shipped back the itanium version of the 4440 as it would randomly panic...all these issues have since been addressed it seems
The new processors are not interchangable with PARISC, they are diff motherboards and chipsets as well, HP had promised they would be even back in the N/V/L era but it never came to fruition. I see they even have Itanium superdomes now:)
O yes the itanium machines are a nice grey color too! much better than the standard HP "Quartz" color
