Ok who wants to play with this server and assist me? I'm super stuck and need to get it up and running. 
What hardware and Solaris version do you have?
Some more details would be useful.

I now have a sun ultrasparc 10 with solaris 10 loaded on it. I need alot of help
gzip and apache are part of solaris 10... so why do you need to install it?
Right now I'm trying to get ftp to work. Any and all help is needed please

I need to get ftp up and working
I have been able to login using hyperterminal but having problems otherwise. Its a brand new install of solaris 8
"brand new" is quite an overstatement for an OS last updated 8 years ago and that has reached its end-of-support-life on March 31, 2012.
ftp works out of the box though. Perhaps are you connecting as root instead of a regular user, or using an anonymous connection ?
