How to test the speed of your WIFI network?

Dear all,

Would you know how to measure the max speed of a WIFI connection between a router and a laptop for instance?

Many thanks for your help!
Regards,

Easy: shovel data and measure the rate, that is the basic idea. For instance, do a large file transfer and use the time command to get the tie needed from which you can easily compute the transfer rate.

I hope this helps.

That usually is indicated in the router's monitoring pages. There should be max bandwidth and actual bw.

The speed is going to vary greatly depending on the distance between the laptop and the wifi access point, and also on what is between the laptop and the wifi access point (walls, floors, etc.)

Wifi is pretty clever, it will adjust the transmission rate dynamically to adapt to changing signal conditions. Any measurements you take will be relevant only to that specific laptop location; i.e. if you move the laptop, even just a few feet, you may see different results.
