I want to install a .deb package which I already have on the hard drive. I have tried to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to point to the file but apt-get says it can't find it. The package is not in the Debian repository.

I've never directly installed a package. There were some other hits from the search.
Ever looked at dpkg? man dpkg

I have used dpkg to check the status of a package but it did not occur to me it would install packages also. Thanks for the help!
