Dual Boot Linux Recommendation

Hi there,

Let me make things simple........I want to dual boot Vista 32 bit with some version of Linux / Unix OS.

Please recommend........Open SuSE 11, Fedora 9, Ubuntu etc etc 32 bit or 64 bit??

My desktop is Sony Vaio VGC-LS1.

Lap top Dell XPS 1710.

Hoping to hear your recommendations,

Thanks in advance!

If your system is 32 bit, go for a 32 bit version of those OSes. If hardware is 64 bit, you can install and run 64 bit or 32 bit. Please check your hardware configuration and processor details.

The choice of OS is really upto you and how familiar you are with Linux OS. All of the distributions quoted by you are doing pretty well. If you are starting to learn Linux, you may start with a distro which is easy to install and gives you smooth desktop experience. Ubuntu is a proven distro from that aspect.

Are you choosing versions at random? Fedora 9 is very outdated. Stop and don't do that. OpenSUSE 11 (which sub version?) is also outdated at this point, and you should probably go to 12.1.

I happen to like OpenSUSE, but you can try whichever you like. Hell, you can even use something like Virtualbox to create a virtual machine from within windows to get yourself used to them and find which one you like.

That way, you will likely have fewer hardware problems and can fall back to your windows machine to get on the internet if you have issues.
