i have a vmware workstation with solaris 10 installed on this.
i copying 2 gb data via samba from windows to this vmware workstation.
copy speed is 24 kb/sec.
how i can speed up this copy process ?
Well, the simple answer would be to check your networking performance by using some other system than Samba. Maybe try using the Solaris machine access another resource, something would bypass Samba. I'd upload the files you want to transfer to an FTP server and then download them on the Solaris machine. If you see the performance you expect then you'll know it's certainly related to Samba.
It never ceases to amaze me how people jump to the conclusion that Solaris has a problem. You have a Windoze system involved here and that's the first place to look. What you are describing would be a major defect in a Sun/Oracle flagship product. I can tell you from experience that if you tell Oracle that you've found a major defect in a flagship product, they'll ask you to prove it, and if you prove it, all hell breaks loose. It gets fixed pdq. No such thing with Windoze. You'll probably get no reaction from MS or they'll even claim it's a "feature".
Network performance in Windoze is a known problem (especially if you are using gigabit interfaces) which has caused masses of bust-ups. Read this link just as an example, there's plenty more.

Yes, I agree. If my response was unclear, allow me to clarify. What I was referring to is a potential issue between the VMware layer (and the user's configuration on his personal computer) and samba. This would certainly not indicate any issue with Samba but, at best, an incompatibility between it's implementation and his specific virtualization technique.
Apologies if I created any confusion. It would be almost impossible for Solaris' implementation of Samba to be the source of the problem.

I thought your post was quite clear and accurate. No confusion; you are perfectly correct. However, the OP must think Solaris is the place to look because it's posted on the Solaris forum. I just went on more of a rant than you. Guys use Sun/Oracle products to run banks so no room for this kind of bug.
Roger, thanks! I know we use Solaris for some pretty serious financials and have amazing stability. Sun Solaris servers are impressive.
I'll just add a few more points from my experience that might help.
- It doesn't matter what Windoze version it is, old or new, they all seem to suffer from this.
- Using gigabit interfaces makes it worse.
- Transfering very large files makes it much worse. Starts off good and then gets sloooooower and slooooooooooooooower. Thousands of smaller files is less of a problem but still slow.

Any progress on this? Can you take Windows out of the equation by testing with another Unix/Linux system to prove how fast the network goes?
