Connecting to the service processor?

Hi Folks,

I am a new AIX user. This is my first post in the UNIX forums. I did do a little bit of search before creating this post, but did not find any conclusive information. I am trying to connect to the service processor of an older 44p Model 170 box using my laptop. The 44p box has two serial ports (i guess they are DB9M (as the pins are present). But my laptop has a port with 15pins(Female) that i use to connect to other monitors or projectors. My question is, if i purchase a DB15M to DB9F cable, will the serial connection work. If not shall i go for a USB to DB9F cable.

Thanks

...................bump! 25 views and no reply. Hey plz let me know if my question does not make sense. I am new at this, ill definitely try putting it another way.

Thanks

The IBM cable is crossed out, so you need a "nullmodem" cable. I'm not sure about the 44p using 19200,N,1,p or 9600,N,1,p as interface settings. The older machines used 9600 baud, the newer ones use 19200, but i am not sure to which group the 44p belongs to. One of these settings it is for sure.

You can find a pinout schema here.

I hope this helps.

edit: oh, and its half past 9 over here - i sincerely apologize for having been asleep for so long on a saturday and not having responded earlier to your question. The next time i expect a question from you I'll stay up the night.

Hey thanks for the info. Especially for the sarcasm. I did realize that it was the weekend. But when i saw that there were 25 views and no replies, being a newbie i genuinely wondered whether my question made any sense. I did not mean to come off as an a$$ in any way. Sorry to bother you. Thanks again for making the newcomers feel welcome.

OK shaell, we got the reply the first time
Welcome to the club.
Did you get into the service processor menus on your 44p?
You'll need 9,600 for your machine and it must show "OK" on the operator panel for you to gain access, i.e. the OS must be shut down but the machine powered on.
On the console attached to S1 or S2 (S1 is better) just hit a key on the console keyboard and the service procssor menu should come up.

Hi shaell
well, I doubt that it will work : you say that you use this 15pins connector to connect to other monitors or projectors ! so it is a Video connector and not a serial port... You'd better go for a USB to DB9 adapter.
