CDROM Issue on LPAR HMC VIO

Whenever I assign/unassign a CDROM ( RAID CTRL ) to Active LPAR from HMC, I have to reboot the LPAR.

How can I do it without rebooting the LPARS.

POWER6 with HMC
LPARS = AIX 6.1

Any info

But doesn't answer the question.... some info though...

Dynamic LPAR tips and checklists for RMC authentication and authorization

This article provides dynamic LPAR tips for Resource Monitoring and Control \(RMC\) authentication and authorization. The author includes a checklist for DLPAR setup, and information about setting up the HMC/partitions hostname and network. The appendixes provide information gathered from the field about RMC/DLPAR.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/eserver/articles/DLPARchecklist.html

Someone told me that if the LPARs can ping the HMC then it is possible to move the CDROM ( RAID Controller ) from LPAR to another LPAR. using DLPAR feature or HMC profile ADD AS DESIRED..

Should the HMC and the managed server have static IP or DHCP will also work ??

1) I made the RAID Controller ( Which has the CDROM + 2 Physical Disks )
" As Desired " when assigning it to the LPAR

2) Restart the LPAR
( I shouldn't restart the LPAR. It should detect it with cfgmgr )

3) Unassign the cdrom, ( raid controller ) from HMC

4) restart the LPAR from where it was unassigned

5) Restart the LPAR to where it is assigned

---

This should happen without restarting...

On the other forums. there are other ways to do it.
remove the pci / cdrom device

thanks

After making sure that HMC - LPARs are DLPAR capable by going through this document
Dynamic LPAR tips and checklists for RMC authentication and authorization

It works.

Basically HMC should be able to ping all the LPARS and vice-versa.

Hostname from LPARs and HMC should be resolvable.

HMC daemons should be running in the LPARs.

then it will work.

For the record:

The DLPAR checklist you refer to is for power4 machines and none of the host name or host resolution checks applies to power 5 or 6 because the rsct / rmc daemons only use ip addresses in p5 and p6 machines.

In p4 things were very different because the hmc used host names only and the system connection to the service processor was a serial link not an ip link.

This is a better link for p5/6 dlpar problems:

Removing the CD ROM from DLPAR and assigning it to another LPAR

On the LPAR find out where the CD-ROM is assigned:

# lsdev -Cc cdrom
cd0 Available 03-08-00 SATA DVD-ROM Drive

# lsdev -Cl cd0 -F parent
sata0

# lsdev -Cl sata0 -F parent
sissas0

# lsslot -c slot
# Slot Description Device(s)

# lsdev -Cc cdrom -F "name physloc"
cd0 U789D.001.DQD52DG-P4-D1

Then from HMC -- go to --> Dynamically Logical Partitioning --> Physical Adapters --> Remove
Remove the controller and then assign to another partition.
