Well, since I wrote the below, I've learned a little more about Samba, and got them to at least acknowledge each other. Still can't use Gaurd dog. Still cant print from one to the other.

I recently installed mepis 7 on both my laptop and laptop. (I came from Mepis 6.5). since the change I can't get these computers to recognize each others existence, except to be able to ping from one to the other if the firewall (Gaurdog) is off. And I can't discover that port 631 (I believe that is the port for the print server) is open. I don't really know how to find out, or how to open it if it is closed.
Laptop is Amd-64 with a 32bit distro. Desktop is Compaq Presario AMD64 with 32bit distro.
I'm still quite a nuB, so if I haven't given enuf info here, please tell me what you need to know and (hopefully) how I can find out.
