if you've a installserver configured and build a valid konfiguration for your server the "- install" will start an unattended installation of solaris.
is possible to get installation over console , something like gentoo installation
It could be possible, that you use something like LIVE CDs, that would not start an installation process during "normal" boot. There, you could specify '- install' in order to directly start installation.
As already said, it is also used to tell the boot process to look out for an unattended installation procedure.
