BIOS Serial Number on Sun Fire V240

Hi,

I want to know if there is a command available for obtaining the BIOS Serial Number on a Sun Fire V240 machine? Or is it a known issue that it cannot be obtained through any command?

Thanks,

Vineet

on the older V240's you have to eyeball the box and see the serial number sticker.

on most of the newer boxes (last 12-18 months) it is in the NVRAM and can be seen using sneep.
sneep can be installed from a solaris package.

if you have an older box, you can use sneep to put the serial number into NVRAM.

note that there is no BIOS in sparc boxes! it's called OBP ;). if there is no sneep on your box, maybe there is Sun explorer installed and the "default" file contains the serial if a sun engineer installed the server...

A Sparc based machine has a unique "hostid" number based on the network MAC address, the hostid can be obtained by typing hostid and is what is used by licensing software like Flexlm.

hostid can be shown by using the showrev command
