Anyone recommend the best VM platform to run x86 solaris on my dell laptop?

I am not sure what the 'best' one is, however as you are evaluating, look at Sun's VirtualBox. I have am Ubuntu laptop and use VirtualBox to run Solaris and WinXP. The laptop is a dual core HP business (6510b).
In my experience it works pretty well

In my opinion having used almost all of the VM platforms currently available is that Virtualbox is indeed that best option for desktop use. Not only does it work for Solaris guests, but you can if you decide to move to Solaris as the main OS, run another operating system as a guest on a Solaris machine.
