i've tried every variation possible and keep getting not sorted error. can anyone shed any light on how to do this?

If you did not post homework, please explain the company you work for and the nature of the problem you are working on. Please, show us what you did try (instead of saying that you "tried every variation possible". And, since your files are not sorted on their key value fields and you seem to want your output in the same unsorted order, please explain why you are restricting yourself to using join (which, as you know, requires sorted input files) to perform this task.
