BAD magic number in disc label...

Hello All,

I m very new to this forum.

i m having SUN NETRA X1 server with 40 GB HDD (Seagate) & 128 MB RAM.
i m trying this server for SUN 10 Practise.

As i m installing SUN 9 /10 with CD ,its giving me error after OK propmt

***************************
#boot cdrom
or
#boot cdrom -s
****************************
ERROR............
can't open Boot device: disk File and args:
Bad Magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package

.............................................

after this it returns to OK propmt.

i tried a lot , changhe my CD ROM, installation media, HDD.
everything is detected.
but its not starting the installation.

can someone help me to get rid of this.

Thanks in advance.

The code you posted suggests the system tried to boot from "disk", not "cdrom". Are you typing in "boot cdrom" at the ok prompt?

***************************
#boot cdrom
or
#boot cdrom -s
****************************
ERROR............
can't open Boot device: disk File and args:
Bad Magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package

.............................................

Thanks for ur time n reply...
it means my HDD is not detected by system..?
i have changed my HDD to for this reason already....
will check another HDD again,as u suggested..
thanks...

plz check if any other solution is available or not..?

Thanks & Regards
Amrut_K

Check is cdrom is set to any device or not with the help of devalias. What you can do in this case for test is run probe-ide or probe-scsi and sees if you can.
Other thing you can do is instead of writing boot cdrom -s may be you can replace the cdrom with full physical path.

128mb is not enough memory to install solaris 10 on this machine... please check the install requirements at Sun Microsystems Documentation

best,
DN2

Thanks to all first.

i tried solaris 8 n 9 CD too for this thing..

i am not getting..?

i googled it, found that some people are suggesting to upgrade its openboot version...

is it ok if i upgrade it to higher level?

Thanks..

allways go for latest firmware... if there is an update, install it and try again.

btw. your alias for cdrom is ok.

yaap i will search for another upgrade.

another thing this time i got some different error.

Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@2,0:f File and args:
failed to read super block
Boot load failed.
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

then i changed my media got another o/p

as the media is new n without scratch.

Thanks for reply.

which solaris version do you use? is it sparc?

as 128 MB is not supported for sun 10 ,i m trying SPARC 9 media..

In the fist post you said you want to practice for Solaris 10 (exam?). Then you need Solaris 10 not 9, because they differ very much...

as 128 MB is not supported for sun 10 ,i m trying SPARC 9 media..

another thing..
as u suggest i have downloaded newer version for OBP upgrade.
i dont have root password, for gaining access to single user mode.
what could be another way.?

Thanks

then if i upgrade my Memory then will this NETRA x1 support to SUN 10..?
it required 512 mim..1 GB rec..

you no need to worry about single user password since you're reinstalling the OS. You're going off the track. First, try to burn another dvd and try.upgrading your RAM and making your dvd bootable is not related at all. Make sure to get the system to read your dvd 1st

Thanks for ur reply.

some of people are suggesting un such case to burn CD/DVD with alchohole120 tool.
i will try with CD & DVD too.n let u know the result.

Thanks & Regards
Amrut_K
